still und dunkel
Audiovisual performance/expended cinema, ongoing live performance series, 2011-2020
45 - 50 minutes, HD, black and white, two screens, stereo

STILL UND DUNKEL was formed in 2011 by media artist Pascal Arnold, musician and visual artist Christoph Brünggel and filmmaker Benny Jaberg. They have been seeking out abandoned places – deserted sites in states of transformation or decay and inaccessible spaces that have remained undisturbed for some time – documenting them with moving images and sound recordings. Their growing archive is performed with dual-screen live film editing by Arnold and Jaberg and electronic music by Brünggel, whose compositions contain field recordings and are inspired by the places visited.

We are drawn to the aura of disused factories, abandoned civil defense facilities and other utopian non-places. The temporality of such locations and their potential to evoke loneliness inspire us. We examine these abandoned locations for their capacity to capture and store time. We see these places as unloved memorials for things faded, things that have long ceased to exist. Abandoned places provide us with the silence and time to think about the present, to remember or imagine the past, and to envision a future.

With each performance we go in search of man-built, persistently untouched places and thereby create an associative archive of such locations. All these venues might be lost to human needs. But under the thick coat of dust, insects rejoice in living, plants defeat concrete floors and spiders create ingenious artifacts of the future. Despite the filth, there is beauty in decay.
